There was a huge fire Monday morning at Carroll Park in Pigtown. Luckily, it wasn’t the Carroll Mansion as some people initially thought. Turns out it was the bath house. This is still a substantial loss for local little league teams. They were supposed to start up soon, but instead lost their offices and equipment in the blaze. I wonder if the City will rebuild. I love the park and during the season play softball there every week. I used to play basketball there frequently too. Two years ago they added four more hoops and last year the football field was improved as well. But the park still has all of the problems of the city in general. If you look closely, it’s not hard to find needles, condoms, vials, etc. Not to mention guys on dirtbikes and homeless guys passed out on the bleachers. Hopefully the City will keep investing in the park and we will see continued improvement.
I’m going to try to stop by the park this week, maybe tonight on my way to check out a house in Morrell Park that’s up for auction. In the meantime, check out WJZ for video of the fire and aftermath:
Step into the time machine! This video was made the year before I was born, so it’s hard for not to laugh at the “cutting edge” technology it shows. But I bet at the time it was really impressive. 1984 was the first year that the US Census added questions on computer ownership and back then only 7.9% of households had a computer. And I have no idea how many were connected to whatever sort of early modem system they showed in the video. This video gives a whole new meaning to the term early adopter.
Think about it this way: the Baltimore Sun didn’t launch their website until 1996 (sunspot.net). So we’re talking 15 years before that.
I totally would have been one of those people though, calling some computer in Ohio every day just to read a few glowing green lines about the Orioles. So check out this video and pay your respects to the people who paved the way for the news addicted, citizen journalism, always connected, RSS fed, podcasting, Crackberry culture that we have today.
Obama gave another great speech while he was in town over the weekend. But I know I wasn’t the only one who heard him say “Let’s Get Out’a Here” as he left the stage. I’ve been talking about this around the office and everyone heard it, yet no one wrote about it. The Daily Show didn’t mention it. Even the Colbert Report passed up the opportunity to roast the new Prez. Is Obama just in a honeymoon period and above criticism? Or did I just mishear or misinterpret the end of his speech? Fast forward to the 5:30 mark or so,
They’ve been putting out a series of videos lately documenting some of worst examples of illegal dumping in Pigtown. I love that they call out the owners by showing their information. You might even recognize a few of the names such as the one and only Barry Glazer. Unfortunately, the soundtrack may get stripped due to copyright infringement, but you still get the point. Don’t let stuff like this stop you from investing in an “up and coming” neighborhood. Neighborhoods like Pigtown need good responsible property owners to come in and get involved. Once the tide turns, you can sit back and enjoy having the smallest mortgage on the block! Finally, if you want to know more or get more involved in Pigtown, start by joining their Yahoo! group here.
The Ravens are playing the Titans tomorrow, so it seemed like a good time to dig up an old Ravens video I shot. This is a promo for a contest Baltimoresun.com put on last year. Since I’ve only told close family and friends about my new site, you’ve probably seen this before. But here’s a whole new opportunity to mock me for my horrible acting, not even purple facepaint, and super awkward woooo’s.
